Employer and PA Training

On behalf of Essex PASS, Southend DP Support and Cambs DPSS, ECDP Training Team provides training and support to disabled people employing Personal Assistants. Training includes a two day Employer Training course, a Personal Assistant (PA) Training Day, Moving and Handling, Food Safety, Empowering the Employer, Risk Assessment, Emergency Life Support First Aid Training and the new Epilepsy Awareness training.

Epilepsy Awareness - New

This training will provide participants with the necessary knowledge in dealing with seizures and epilepsy. The training will consist of:

  • Facts about epilepsy
  • Symptoms
  • Different seizure types
  • First aid for seizures

Employer Training

This two day training course has been designed to enable direct payment / personal budget recipients to become responsible employers. Day one will cover responsibilities, giving advice on every element of the recruitment process, from advertising to induction. Day two will look at employment law and is run in conjunction with ACAS (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service). Employment law is constantly changing and it is the employer's responsibility to be aware of these updates and take action accordingly.

Empowering the Employer

This training is designed to provide Direct Payments or Personal Budget users employing personal assistants, with an opportunity to build on their confidence as an employer. Workshops will focus on recognising rights and needs, resolving difficulties, elements of compromise and behavioral types. The course is specifically focused around the daily challenges of being an employer and will give participants an opportunity to practice assertiveness skills in a safe environment.

PA Training

This course has been designed specifically for Personal Assistant’s (PA’s) and covers the following:

  • What is independence?
  • What is a Personal Assistant?
  • How PA’s work and their role in Independent Living
  • Understanding the difference between a PA and a carer
  • Models of Disability

Emergency Life Support

This programme provides the opportunity to learn key life-saving skills and gain an awareness of treatment for shock and significant blood loss. This is a very practical course for those who would like an understanding of key life-saving skills, including resuscitation choking and dealing with unconscious persons (such as using the recovery position).

Students will receive a credit card sized certificate that is valid for 3 years.

Moving & Handling

"Employers must provide for all their employees the information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, their health and safety at work" (The health and Safety at Work Act, 1974)

Course includes:

  • Legislation
  • Statistics on Manual Handling Injuries
  • Causes of Back Injury
  • Bio mechanics
  • Controversial Techniques
  • Practical Session using a range of Manual Handling Aids

Risk Assessment

A properly implemented programme of risk assessments can assist in preventing injuries, property damage and other losses. Employers must ensure that people undertaking risk assessments are competent to do so. This course will cover the necessary knowledge and practical skills.

Food Safety

This course covers food poisoning, Bacteriology, prevention of contamination and food poisoning, personal hygiene, cleaning and disinfection. This is an accredited course and there will be a multiple choice exam at the end of the course.
