Right to Control Consulation - ECDP Response

In September ECDP invited members to discuss the government’s recent consultation on the Right to Control (see original article here).

The Right to Control is about disabled people having control over certain state support they receive in order to go about their daily lives. The consultation considers how existing funding streams may be brought under one banner (similar to the intention of Individual Budgets within the social care sector).

The response shows that our members were widely supportive of the principles behind the Right to Control and in particular the idea to put disabled people in control of the funding they receive and the services they use. It also notes that the role of disabled people’s organisations – building on their existing role within social care – is likely to expand under the Right to Control. Since disabled people’s organisations like ECDP are well used to providing support to disabled people to enable them to live independently, we believe the Right to Control can and should build upon the expertise and experience of Third Sector Organisations in providing support services to disabled people within the social care sector and beyond.
