ECDP Train the Trainer Process

If you are seriously interested in becoming a DE Trainer you should contact Amanda Preston-Flack (Training Development Manager) to discuss further. Your name will then be put on a waiting list for the next available course.

You will be asked to complete a ‘Trainer’s Profile’ and invited to an informal interview, where you will be asked a variety of questions in order to assess your suitability as an ECDP trainer. Shortly after this you will receive confirmation of the decision and, if you are selected for a place, a schedule of training. Prior to the commencement of training, you will be asked to complete all necessary paperwork.

If during the training, you or the organisation decides that you are unsuitable as a trainer, it is expected that the deciding party will notify the other as soon as possible.

On completion, subject to a satisfactory assessment throughout the course, you will be invited to a completion meeting. At this meeting further development opportunities will be discussed and both parties will be required to sign a self-employed Trainers Contract. Following this, you will be entitled to attend Trainers Development Meetings, and be added to the Training distribution list where you will be eligible to apply for allocation of training.

Content

These sessions will to some extent be planned around the participants involved in the course and will be adapted to the types of training work that ECDP is developing at the time.

Topics studied will include;

  • Training methods
  • Assessment of own access requirements
  • Responsibilities of an ECDP Trainer
  • Preparing for a training event
  • Models of disability
  • Independent Living
  • Personal assistance
  • Direct Payments
  • ECDP Trainers protocol

The main method used is verbal discussion, with hard copy documents in 14pt sans serif typeface. There will be strictly limited use of handouts from those running the course – we will make available to you in disc form the types of materials used on the courses. We will also share with each other where to find materials on the internet. It is unlikely that you will need to take lots of notes.

If you have any access requirements relating to this methodology, please let Amanda Preston-Flack or Clare Emmins know if you have not already done so.

Duration

The duration of the course is dependent on the participants, and session lengths are also flexible, based on the general consensus of the group. We want all our trainers to feel confident when training, and obviously this will affect the length of the course.

Expectations

The participant will need to commit to fulfilling the following criteria:

  • Attend all training sessions (unless there are mitigating circumstances).
  • Study at home as required.
  • Complete paperwork required by funders and/or ECDP.
  • To undertake observation sessions of other ECDP trainers (minimum three).
  • To abide by ECDP’s policies and procedures as outlined in the trainer handbook on completion of the course.
  • To represent ECDP’s core values.

ECDP commits to:

  • Provide access to Disability Equality expertise.
  • Provide training to participants with a view to them becoming and ECDP trainer.
  • Meet all specified access requirements.

Post Graduate Certificate – Disability Equality Practitioner

“A professionally and academically accredited disabled person, whom adheres to a Social Model perspective and who’s work positively contributes to the disability movement.” A. Preston-Flack, 2006

In partnership with

Introduction

For many years ECDP has recognised the need to formally distinguish it’s trainers as ’experts’ in the field of disability equality. In order to reflect the professionalism of Disability Equality Trainers and acclaim the vital role their work plays, ECDP sought to gain academic accreditation at Post Graduate (PG) level. In July 2006 this was achieved.

ECDP’s Train the Trainers (TTT) course now forms part of an accredited PG Certificate – ‘Disability Equality Practitioner’. Once the training course with ECDP has been completed, participants have the opportunity to put the credits achieved towards a full PG Certificate.

Studying at Post Graduate Level

Whilst already having studied at degree level would assist students with entry requirements of the course; not having done so will not automatically exclude you as a potential student. Those not in possession of a first degree will be assisted by both partner organisations (Anglia Ruskin & ECDP) with the completion of a ‘Non Graduate Entry Form’.

Programme Length

The PG Certificate is expected to take one academic year for students to complete.

Structure

The course involves two 30 credit modules; module one focusing on the practitioner element and module two focusing on disability equality.

Location

Study will primarily take place at ECDP’s building: Ivan Peck House. Students will also be encouraged to utilise Anglia Ruskin’s facilities.

Disabled Students Allowance

This provision was introduced by the Government in 1990. The intention was to create a semblance of equality for disabled people with non disabled people. Those considering progressing onto the PG Certificate may wish to consider an application to this fund in order to assist with the purchasing of equipment and meeting of access requirements. Again, both parties (ECDP and Anglia Ruskin) will work with those students wishing to make an application.

Becoming a Student

Those enrolling on this course will become full students of Anglia Ruskin University and as such have full access to student facilities and services. These include:

  • Library
  • Sports and social facilities
  • Student services
  • Academic support

Accreditation

Completion of the PG Certificate will provide you with academic accreditation, and as such academic recognition as a Disability Equality Practitioner. Once students have achieved this standard, they will then be eligible to work with the Coalition to acquire professional recognition of their work and contributions to the disability movement.

What can students do with their qualifications?

Some may choose to work for ECDP in order to gain professional recognition of their work. Others may work for another similar organisation. Some might choose to go it alone; becoming completely independent Disability Equality Practitioners. Their work might involve advising statutory, private and/or voluntary organisations on relevant policy or perhaps even training other disabled people on their rights and entitlements. As a post graduate they may choose to progress their study to complete a Masters degree. As a Disability Equality Practitioner the possibilities are endless.
